Senior Substation Design Engineer
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead complete design process of high-voltage substations, including physical layout, protection and control systems, grounding, and conduit design.
- Develop and review engineering drawings such as single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, equipment layouts, and bill of materials.
- Coordinate with clients, project managers, and other engineering disciplines to ensure timely and accurate delivery of project deliverables.
- Conduct technical reviews and provide quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) for engineering documents.
- Ensure designs meet all applicable codes, standards (IEEE, NESC, NEC), and utility/client specifications.
- Prepare engineering reports, cost estimates, and technical studies.
- Lead the design and engineering of high-voltage substation projects (69kV to 500kV), overseeing multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring the successful execution of projects in compliance with industry standards and California regulatory requirements.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance and leadership within the substation design team.
- Assist with business development and proposal efforts by providing technical expertise and estimating design hours.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in substation design engineering (69kV to 500kV).
- Current California Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required.
- Extensive knowledge of substation equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, control panels, etc.).
- Proficient in industry-standard design software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, or similar).
- Strong understanding of applicable codes and standards (NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI).
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Experience working with California utilities (e.g., PG&E, SCE, SDG&E).
- Experience with substation automation and SCADA integration.
- PMP certification or formal project management training.
